Inauguration of Cointer’s operations and maintenance centre for its rail freight project in Uruguay

An important milestone has been celebrated in our Uruguayan rail freight project with the inauguration of the PorTren Operations and Maintenance Centre.  PorTren is the consortium formed by Cointer and Christophersen | CHR Group.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, the Minister of Transport and Public Works, José Luis Falero, and the Mayor of Canelones, Yamandú Orsi, among other authorities. They were joined  by the President of Grupo Azvi, Manuel Contreras Caro, the Honorary President, Manuel Contreras Ramos, and the President of  CHR Group, Guillermo Jacob.

These modern facilities, located in Canelones, will serve UPM for 22 years, transporting 2.3 million tonnes of pulp per year along the 265 km route between Paso de los Toros and the Port of Montevideo.

The COM has a modern, fully-equipped 3,000 m2 workshop, to service our fleet of 7 locomotives and 140 wagons, as well as a 1000m2 control and administration area.

PorTren is the partnership between Cointer and Christophersen (CHR Group), responsible for the supply of all rolling stock and the construction of the COM.

Rail transport will be operated by the DBCC Transport consortium, made up of Cointer, CHR Group Uruguay and DB International Operations.

A new era for rail transport in Uruguay begins!
